Orthopedic Open House a Success

On Tuesday, June 21st, UHD opened their doors to the public as it hosted the first ever
Orthopedic Open House. The event offered the chance to view the facility and to see first-hand what UHD has to offer. The event centered on a series of informational stations. Visitors were able to meet the providers, including practicing orthopedic specialists, and see the diagnostic, operative, post-operative, and physical therapy services and equipment. Some of the exciting displays featured on-site digital x-rays, physical therapy center and treatment rooms, and even an operating room. Visitors explored actual operating rooms and recovery rooms which had examples of the patient experiences, including "patients" in recovery stages. There were even some past UHD orthopedic patients sharing their personal experiences and their road to recovery.
The orthopedic department at UHD has been providing total orthopedic care for patients in Blue Earth and the surrounding communities for over 15 years. Based on UHD's focus group initiative in the fall of 2010, group data indicated a lack of local awareness about the types of orthopedic services UHD offered. The public wanted to explore the facilities and really learn what orthopedics was about. Not only that, but the study found that some people didn't even know what orthopedics was exactly. Based on that data, a select group of orthopedic care givers came together to give people what they needed—a chance to experience the facilities in an open house. Chad Helmstetter, PA-C, said the group wanted to create an atmosphere that "not only educates about our products and services, but is in-line with current and potential patients' demands and expectations."
The Open House proved to be a beneficial investment for UHD to show who they are and what they do. The event was a complete success; nearly 200 people attended the event, and ten visitors set up appointments before leaving. UHD next plans to set up an orthopedic display at the Women's Expo in the fall. UHD is also interested in doing another event that brings the public back to do more hands-on learning and exploring, such as a sports camp for kids promoting diet and exercise.
The ultimate goal of the Open House was to express to the community that UHD is completely committed to providing high quality care locally. UHD has all of the modern facilities, technology, and highly qualified care providers and specialists to attend to the needs of each patient. Candace Arends, Chief Nursing Officer at UHD, says "People have choices, but they don't have to travel out of town to find the best care possible. UHD provides wonderful medical, surgical, and diagnostic services close to home."
